Tourette Talk: Supporting Siblings of Children with Special Needs

There are many types of programs in place to support a child with special needs, and there are support groups for parents and grandparents who need guidance in navigating the challenges of raising a child with special needs.  However, there is another group that also needs assistance, and that is siblings. Parents understand why they need to focus attention on their child diagnosed with a special need but at the same time parents also agonize over what impact this is having on the siblings in the family.  There may be feelings of guilt, neglect or even inadequacy. What can parents do to support their other children, the siblings?

Join Dr. Jeff Lichtman in this special Tourette Talk where he will discuss what the research shows and talk about the ways you can support siblings. Dr. Lichtman is a psychologist with many years of experience in both regular and special education. He has masters’ degrees in school psychology and education from St. John’s University and NYU. Jeff received his undergraduate and rabbinical training from Yeshiva University, where he completed his doctorate as well.  His areas of expertise include individual & group counseling, social skills training, and teacher training. In addition, he is Director Emeritus of Yachad, The National Jewish Council for Disabilities (NJCD), Dean of the Ivdu Schools and a consultant to schools and agencies around mental health, leadership, and promoting the Inclusion of all children and adults with disabilities.

Tourette Talks are designed for open discussions and the exchange of information and ideas and are a safe space for frank dialogue.  Bring your questions and get the conversation going.
