The New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders (NJCTS) celebrates Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month, observed annually from May 15 through June 15. This year’s campaign calls on families, educators, healthcare providers, elected officials, and community members across New Jersey to stand together in support of the hundreds of thousands of Americans living with Tourette Syndrome or a tic disorder.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurobiological disorder characterized by uncontrollable movements and sounds known as tics. As many as 1 in 50 people show signs of TS or other tic disorders, which are frequently accompanied by co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, OCD, and anxiety. Despite how common TS is, widespread misunderstanding and stigma remain significant barriers for those living with the disorder.

“Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month is our opportunity to replace myths with facts, fear with understanding, and isolation with community. At NJCTS, we see every day what is possible when individuals with TS are empowered and accepted, and this month, we invite all of New Jersey to join that mission.” – Hilary Kruchowy, NJCTS Executive Director

Throughout the month, NJCTS will turn the town teal by lighting up locations in Somerville, including teal ribbons on Main St., post TS facts vs. myths online and do community outreach activities across New Jersey. A highlight of the campaign is June 4, officially designated Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day in New Jersey by state legislation signed by Governor Murphy in 2018. On that day, NJCTS encourages residents to request official proclamations from their mayors and town councils, attend local recognition ceremonies, and share their personal TS stories with their communities.
