The next act: Developing self-reliance in your child

There comes a right time. There comes a time when you need to be there for yourself. There comes a time when you need to be there for each other. There comes a time when you need to there for your mom, dad, sister or brother or friend. There comes a time that you need to be there for your child — many, many times.

But there also comes a time when your child needs to be there for him or herself. He needs to find out his strengths and limitations and make realistic goals and plans for himself.  Even though we have been there for him every step of the way — through every happiness, struggle and agony — cheering, modeling, protecting because we love him beyond all reason, there comes a time when loving means stepping back and giving him space.

Because he has to take the next step without you holding his hand or catching him when he falls — allowing him to gain his own wisdom by exploring his inner kingdom … finding freedom in the jungle of his days, creating the keys to discover life as a man, choosing rocks that support his strong foundation, and raising up beams to bring himself stability.

Both painful and unfathomable to you both, yet a source of pride and wonder.  There comes the right time.  His time to take the spotlight on the stage of self-determination.
