The holidays can be a very exciting and fun time of the year, but they can also come with many challenges, especially when you have Tourette syndrome. While holiday parties, gatherings, and traditions can be really fun they can also mean crowded spaces, loud noises, disrupted routines, what may feel like never ending Tourette’s explanations, and more things that can quickly make managing tics and enjoying festivities difficult. However, with some strategies and planning, it is very possible to navigate this seasons celebrations with confidence and enjoy them as much as you can. Here are some strategies that I hope you find helpful!
Try to stick to your normal routines when you can and practice self care. Take advantage of the time off of school and activities to do things that make you happy. Focus on doing mindful activities that help you limit your stress levels. Try doing something active, reading, baking, or anything you find relaxing that you might not have as much time for when you are not on break.
Ask for help and prepare for stressful situations! If a certain gathering or activity is causing stress, tell someone and know that you do not have to handle it on your own. Something that I worry about is having to see family members and friends during these occasions who may forget that I have TS. Constantly explaining what that means to people multiple times can become very exhausting. So I prepare a simple explanation of a few short sentences to help remind people who do not see me often. This helps me feel comfortable and allows me to focus less on other peoples reactions to my tics. I have also told my close family members that these explanations can be redundant and stressful for me and they do a great job of gently reminding people of my TS when it’s necessary.
Finally remember that the holidays are a time to celebrate, and that includes celebrating yourself! While having TS can make some things more challenging, you have the resilience and skills to handle any challenges you may face. Remember to be kind to yourself and focus on the moments that bring you joy. Happy holidays!
